"As future principals, what do you take away from these "generational differences" readings?"
The basis of the articles is very simply put: The students that we teach today, are not the intended audience for which the educational process was created." Gone are the days of encyclopedias and atlas, and why would you want to use those anyway? With all of the answers you could possibly need being right at your fingertips, in this lightening speed information age that we live in, who wouldn't want to work smarter vs. harder? Education needs a makeover in order to fully compliment and assist todays' learners with their varied learning styles and the multiple formats in which students access information. There will always be a need for books and instruction, but how you go about it can make all the difference. Many of my own assessments in my classroom are project based in which students are responsible for their own learning and finished product. For the students who are not fond of project based learning, I also offer a typical paper pencil assessment to accommodate those students as well. There is no perfect answer, there is however a happy medium where ALL of our students can be successful.
With the introduction of technology however, there are many factors to consider such as ease of use, accessibility, and proper training/development. As future educational leaders, I believe that it is our duty to embrace technology, but at the same time, ensure that it is purposeful and not simply being incorporated because somebody at the head shed told you to...Effectively embracing and implementing technology to enhance teaching, not to rely on the technology for teaching, can empower students to take their learning into their own hands and achieve more on a daily basis.

Nicely done Andy! I'm interested in how this relates to Standard 5.
ReplyDeleteIt was a "rough" draft to mess around with. I tied standard 5 in the second paragraph that was non existent when you first looked at it ;)
ReplyDeleteI agree, Andy, that incorporating technology shouldn't be "just because" but should be meaningful and purposeful for the increase of student learning.
ReplyDeleteI really agree with the first sentence in your post Andy. I think that is a very good way to sum up the issues that we face with technology today. I think that the happy medium that you talk about is where we compromise between the generations.
ReplyDeleteAndy, I believe that you are absolutely right in noting that we need to be purposeful with our integration of technology. Resources just to say we have resources is not an effective way to truly integrate technology into your building in a way that teachers will embrace. Thank you for sharing!
